About the TKTA

Our mission is....

‘To remain one of the UK’s leading academy’s for Kenpo studies’

The TKTA was formed to cater for budding young martial artists. Dedicated classes are provided concentrating on the special requirements for children of school age. However, the forward thinking structure of the TKTA caters for all ages and abilities. Adult classes provide the next step for those who are aged 16 years upward.

For those just beginning in the martial arts there is no better starting place. The focus is to provide a structured path towards the ultimate Black Belt. This creates a foundation for further development once the belt is achieved.

The junior class is run by Mrs Jo O'Connor, 2nd Degree. The classes are designed to provide the young martial artist with confidence, commitment, respect for others, friendship and martial skills.

This is guided by a strict grading structure that ensures a high standard is achieved and well understood. The grades are white, yellow, orange, purple, blue, green & then three levels of brown belt. A junior black belt is only awarded to those who show the true Kenpo spirit. As it is a junior grade, and only a fraction of the whole system has been studied, the belt has a white stripe running along it's length. This distinguishes it from the adult black belt.

To enable the transition from junior to adult black belt a set of tips are awarded. These are based on the adult syllabus incorporating many more aspects of Kenpo. Once the individual has reached the age of 18 and studied the adult syllabus, they are eligible to be invited to grade to 1st degree black belt in the Kenpo system.

The Adults are taught by Mr Paul O'Connor, 3rd Degree. Unlike the junior class the adults study the full system from day one. They learn all aspects via a grading syllabus. The grades are white, yellow, orange, purple, blue, green & then three levels of brown belt. The 1st degree black belt is the first step towards true mastery of the system, 10th degree being the ultimate grade. The grading system in both junior and adult classes are only used as a measure of progress.

What is the full system?

The full system has many aspects which incorporates basic fundamentals, forms, sets, freestyle sparring and self defence techniques. The self defence techniques are combinations of defensive and attacking manoeuvres that are applied on one or more attackers.

Forms and sets are basic fundamentals, punches, kicks, blocks etc, that are combined into a sequence. This sequence can be stationary or by using the stances and foot manoeuvres creates movement.

An important aspect of the full system is the knowledge of how to strike targets to cause a desired effect - something that is watered down in the junior class for obvious reasons.

Currently the TKTA is based in Taunton, Somerset, England. If you are interested in classes or wish to contact the TKTA then please mail us.

The first lesson is free - so why not come along and have a go?
