What is Kenpo?

Simply put, Kenpo is a martial art. Chinese in origin, but more recently developed by the late Grand Master Ed Parker "Father of American Karate". The word Kenpo literally means "Fist Law" or law of the fist.

Ed Parker introduced western logic and language, demystifying the oriental philosophies surrounding martial arts. Kenpo often resembles Karate, due to its recent history, but has the fluid elements found in Chinese martial arts.

Kenpo has many faces. The TKTA teach the practical system of self-defense, based on the teachings of Grand Master Ed Parker. Kenpo is applicable for modern day situations being realistic and highly effective. It uses natural reactions refining them into methods devised to minimise personal risk and maximise results.

The Kenpo system uses combinations of movement known as self-defense techniques, helping to raise the realism of a confrontation through knowledge of cause and effect. A self-defense technique is a short sequence of moves, usually between two people, simulating an element of confrontation. Kenpo principles are emphasised at all stages of training, from basics to the most complex moves.

Anyone can do Kenpo. It is often thought of as the thinking mans martial art. You do not need to be ultra fit, flexible as a rubber band or be able to tear phone books in half. Kenpo is practical and fun for men, women and children, building confidence in more ways than just the physical aspect.

For the under 16's the system has to be watered down, but the core principles are still evident - discipline, strength of character, fun, good exercise and with an element of competition.

For beginners the first class is always free
